She’s the daughter of the God Janus and she is also Lucifer’s chosen one. Although she has spent most of her life trying to avoid him.

She has changed her appearance many times over the years, more so than most. She does this in hopes she wouldn’t be appealing to the devil. She was a child before, and once even a man. But it didn’t work because Lucifer knows her real form and that is who he loves.

He looks like a Viking warrior/Viking King. He’s Dravin’s bodyguard. He’s big. Very big. He looked like he ate other bodyguards for breakfast.

Draven is tall, a full head or so taller than the rest of the men around him. Keira once described him as “gargantuan” – like a seven-foot-tall wrestler. In Transfusion, Amelia tells us that he’s six foot seven and was so big he looked to have a bone mass double that of a normal human man. His arms alone were bigger than Amelia’s head.

He has deep-colored skin, like leather that had seen too much sun or the years. His face was full of what looked like potholes, maybe from a severe case of smallpox.

In Transfusion, you learn a little more about his story. He acts as Amelia’s bodyguard as she grows up. And she tells us about his past.

He was also resurrected upon his death when being thrown into a pit of snakes by the King of Northumbria. But the part of history that hadn’t been written was that Ragnar never sailed to England with the view of conquering it, but it was, in fact, done so out of revenge after English scouts had killed his wife and taken his daughter, who was later murdered by that same King. It was a devastating part of his past and a horrendous death that signified the end of his human life.

Draven requested to have his body reclaimed, and his soul returned with the added demonic side granted to him, making Ragnar the first of the Norse Devourers to reside on Earth. Meaning that even when he was human, he was still considered a beast of a man.

She also tells us that Ragnar has an aggressive-looking presence, with hazel-colored eyes that were kind and had flecks of olive green like lightning attacking the pupil. His full lips were currently framed by a full beard that was more red than the dark blonde on his head and one that had been groomed to almost looking stylish.

Amelia’s nickname for him is Fenry, which came from the Norse beast Fenrir he used to pretend to be, who was a monstrous wolf. His nickname for Amelia is apple.

We later learn that Ragnar is a descendant of the God Oden and the father of Sigurd.

Morgan was a human. He however was being haunted by a demon who fed on his emotions and he became obsessed with Keira based on that. He thought she had the same problem and that he could save her.

In his twisted mind, he thought that maybe killing her family would help with that and she did what she had to do to get away from him and to save her family.

Keira met organ in her art class.

He was young for a tutor, being only in his late twenties. He had bronze-colored hair cut back and short, and he usually wore a trilby hat when first coming into lectures. He had a longish face, with a pointed chin and a long straight nose to match. He had sage green-colored eyes.

At first, he seemed charming and had a clear love of art, and was well-loved by all of his students, including Keira. He seemed to single Keira out as his favorite pupil.

Keira began to notice that he started to follow her everywhere. Every time she turned out, there he was. At first, she thought she was being paranoid, but soon it became clear he was stalking her. He made some excuses and Keira wanting to believe him.

One night she had a dream about Mr. Morgan, not as a demon but being terrified by one. The demon was following him like a plague and slowly killing him, sucking the life out of him.

Keira began to sketch the monster she saw haunting Morgan and had planned on locking him away in her notebook. Only that day they had a fire drill and she left her bag in class. When the fire drill was over, her notebook was gone, along with Morgan.

The next day Morgan approached her at her dorm and asked her to come with him. She didn’t. He scared her so she ran into her dorm room thinking she got away. So Morgan killed Keira’s boyfriend at the time, Tom Robertson, used his phone and tricked Keira into meeting who she thought was her boyfriend but it was really Morgan.

Morgan held Keira against her will, going on about how he was going to save her. He would burn incense, sprinkle her with Holy Water and read different scriptures to her.

Turns out Hugo Morgan was really a man named Douglas Brone. He had a sister who was also named Catherine, who he thought of as more than a sister. One day his sister Catharine finds a boyfriend and this sets Douglas off. He killed them both and then basically went insane.

Karmun describes her simply as working the top table and warns Keira never to approach it directly. Keira’s first impression of her is that she is dressed like a high-end prostitute, a blonde bombshell with blood-red lips and cruel eyes, beautiful in the way that certain dangerous things are beautiful.

Her hostility towards Keira is immediate and visceral. She shoves into her, hisses, orders her to pick up dropped trays, grabs her arm hard enough to leave imprints through her gloves, and when Draven appears and asks if there is a problem, Keira covers for her, a mercy Layla receives with shock rather than gratitude. Draven is not convinced and addresses her by her true name, Lahash, warning her in Gaelic that he will deal with her later. When she is finally out of earshot, he mutters “Kelba,” meaning bitch in Maltese. Later in Book 1, she stabs Keira, an act Draven initially tries to convince her was a dream. It was not.

The books gradually peel back the layers of what Layla actually is. She is a Vampire, made by Lucius, and before working at Afterlife, she held the position of possession officer, a role similar to a supernatural guidance counselor assigned to help newly created beings navigate human existence. She was stripped of that position after a string of poor judgments. She was also Lucius’s spy, placed inside the Afterlife at his instruction to befriend Keira and report on her progress, a mission Layla interpreted considerably more freely than intended. When she is caught and imprisoned at Draven’s stronghold, she eventually escapes by calling on Vetala, a being she served as possession officer and regards as a mother figure, only to immediately betray Vetala by pushing her into her own cell to buy herself a head start.

In Book 3, Keira encounters her again at Lucius’s court, where Layla greets her Vampire king with devotion and Keira with barely concealed murderous fury. The dynamic between Layla and Lucius is revealing. He calls her “my child,” reprimands her publicly, strips her of her powers, and casts her out when she pushes him too far, and she accepts all of it with the desperate compliance of someone who cannot stop herself from coming back. In Book 13, Lucius reveals the truth that Keira had misread all along: Layla was never in love with Draven. She is in love with Lucius. Every act of obsessive hatred towards Keira, every attempt to discredit her and remove her, was rooted in jealousy over Lucius’s fixation with the Chosen One, not Draven’s.

Her hair is a silky mass of black curls, ebony and glossy, worn variously twisted loosely up with tendrils escaping, or falling in waves over one shoulder. She is always perfectly put together, always precisely styled, described at one point as looking fit for a high-end ocean liner, simply in a halter-neck top and white trousers. Standing between her two brothers, her tiny frame looks even smaller by comparison, which consistently disguises just how physically formidable she is. When she lays a punch on Dominic’s face in Book 2, it sounds like bone cracking. The pretty little doll, as Keira puts it, is a powerful Demon.

Her demon nature surfaces as a flicker of red in her eyes when provoked, a glimpse of what sits beneath the polished surface. In her true demon form, she is something else entirely, though the books are deliberately sparing with the specifics. Her ancient name, used across the older timeline of Book 9, is Saphira.

Arsaces I of Persia’s rule began in 247 BC, and according to the books- Dominic ruled as Arsaces for a large part of the Achaemenid empire. (Obviously, Dominic ruled as several Kings, changing through time, as mentioned in Septimus 1)

But before that, we have no dates to prove when Dominic was alive. However, we do have a piece of lore that comes in Septimus 2, when Sophia is telling Kiera about Pertinax.

The story goes that Pertinax was the ruler of supernatural life (presumably on Earth) and also a former president of hell. When Dominic was born, his parentage of half-demon/angel pushed Pertinax out of this role. He has had a vendetta ever since. Septimus 2 mentions Pertinax’s first attack on Arsaces in 193 AD (three months after the murder of Commodus and Pertinax becomes emperor) involving the culmination of -what the books describe as a ‘700-year-old feud’ between Dominic and Pertinax. Therefore, if this feud began at Dominic’s birth (and Pertinax was very angry about this), Dominic’s possible birthday would be around 507 BC.

But then someone else pointed out that Draven is also referred to as Enki. The god first appeared in written works during the Early Dynastic Period III (2600-2334 BCE) and was established as an important god of the Akkadians by c. 2400 BCE, who knew him as Ea. Excavations at Eridu, however, have uncovered evidence of a tradition of shrines to Enki dating back to the founding of the city c. 5400 BCE.
